Dom-Ax-2

Before we dig into what it’s like to be a co-op student here at Guestlogix, we need to first marvel at Dom’s remarkable axe throwing abilities. While tossing steel isn’t a requirement of working here, it doesn’t hurt since you never know what skills are going to come in handy on one of our company outings (generally if you can eat and drink, you’ll be set.) Dom comes to us from the University of Waterloo and has been here for about 2 months. But he has quickly become part of the dream team and an integral contributor to developing the Guestlogix travel commerce platform.

Ask and answers

WM: What is a typical day like for you?

DD: I start each morning with our daily standup to sync up with the team and to prepare for the day ahead. After that I’m basically doing dev work, but in frequent collaboration with other team members. Communication is important because I appreciate the guidance and mentorship from senior members, who are always readily accessible with advice and help. Guestlogix allows me to work hard, but also quickly and efficiently because we’re in small teams. That’s one of the benefits of being in a smaller start-up environment.

WM: What are some things you enjoy in the office?

DD: The office perks like video games at lunch, the frequent snacks, fun company outings, and regularly scheduled coffee chats are great to have. But it’s the people that make this a great place to work. The Guestlogix “dream team” is filled with awesome people. And we have the freedom and trust to work from anywhere.

WM: How do you think your experience here will impact your long-term career goals?

DD: I feel like I’ve gotten the genuine experience of what it’s like working as a full-time dev. There are no “co-op projects” here! There’s an opportunity to pick up real work and contribute production code. And having the chance to be part of a smaller team allows me to have a much more significant impact in the company than when working at larger companies.
