Working in a tech start up is generally regarded as a safe job - you would assume. On any normal day here in the Guestlogix office, you might grab some coffee, write some code, snack on some popcorn, answer some Slack messages, and you go about your life with the secure knowledge that axes are unlikely to be tossed in your direction. That’s what our unsuspecting gCrew team had thought, until suddenly their safety bubble existence was shattered.

This is a long way of saying that the Guestlogix team had a blast at Bad Axe Throwing where we engaged in friendly competition with both each other, and our own inner demons.

Developer emerges victorious, obviously

As the competition pushed towards its inevitable conclusion, one champion was finally cleaved away from the pack. Senior Software Developer, Vanchi won the final tally of points and had the privilege of sitting upon the Throne of Axes. So congratulations, and all that.

Okay, so now my theory about this is this. As a senior software developer, Vanchi is predisposed towards being meticulous and has an almost obsessive attention to detail. IT'S IN HIS JOB DESCRIPTION to problem-solve, innovate, and calmly persist with quality axe tosses meaning that it’s practically impossible for him to have achieved anything less than perfection. Unlike me, a humble content marketing manager, (slightly messy workspace and definitely cluttered brain) who although does have a keen eye for detail, drinks too much coffee to be able to maintain a calmness required of the sport. So he has an unfair advantage, if you ask me.

I don't have any sore feelings

For me, it was all or nothing, which was my eventual undoing. I must admit now that I put too much pressure on myself to hit the venerated “blue dot” of high status (worth like 20 points) and although I was excruciatingly close (as the picture clearly indicates), it was fatally distracting me from my overall goal which was to collect incremental points and therefore helping me to secure a vantage position on the well-vaunted throne in question. This is a long way of saying that I defeated myself. Not to take away from Vanchi’s display of ax-prowess, of course. I’m just saying. If I’d hit that dot, it would have been me atop that pleather throne and not he. But this is neither here nor there.

We’re hiring!

If you’re interested in joining our cool dream team, check out the open positions on our careers page. Maybe we’ll see you at the next installment of axe throwing. And it would be nice if you just let me win.
